Intro

For a first trip to China, it´s a good idea to explore what we call the "classics" of China, like Beijing, Xi'an, the area around Shanghai or, of course, the Great Wall.

You will explore these places while being enthralled by both the new and old China, and left with unforgettable memories.

Itinerary

Day 1 Leave home


Day 2 L Airport welcome in Shanghai Pudong, then transfer to the hotel Start your tour of Shanghai, historical museum, stroll along the Huangpu River. Exhibition dedicated to the founding meeting for the Chinese Communist Party. Return to the hotel. Night in Shanghai


Day 3 B-L Visit Fuxing Park in the morning and Jade Buddha temple, followed by Shanghai museum – the most important museum in China. Transfer to the city of Suzhou. Check into your hotel. Enjoy the evening to take a leisurely walk along the many lit canals in the city. Night in Suzhou


Day 4 B-L After breakfast, visit the most beautiful gardens in the whole of China – the classical gardens of Suzhou Cruise the Grand Canal, one of the biggest hand-made canals in the world. Transfer to Hangzhou. Free evening. Night in Hangzhou


Day 5 B-L Tour of Hangzhou, known as the most romantic city in China. Linyin Temple, one of the biggest in China. Longjin and its famous west lake, made a UNESCO world heritage site in 2011. Cruise and exploration of Xiaoying Island. Transfer to Hangzhou airport in the afternoon for the flight to Guilin. Welcome in Guilin and head to the village of Yangshuo by car. Evening stroll on the West road. Night in Yangshuo


Day 6 B-L Leave for Xingping, among the most beautiful karsts landscapes in China. Short walk along the River Li. Finish the walk by a raft trip. Visit Fuli after lunch, a superb raft trip on one of the calmest and least used parts of the River Li between Fuli and the village of Liugong – see the water buffalos. Visit of a fishing village and a pagoda perched on the edge of a cliff but with a stunning view. Return to Yangshuo by boat. In the evening, attend a traditional fishing ceremony with cormorants on the River Li in the company of a local fisherman. Night in Yangshuo.


Day 7 B-L After breakfast, a bicycle trip (around 25-30 km) through the countryside and away from the beaten track. From Yangshuo, take the small roads along the River Yulong, through sleepy hamlets, rice fields and fish ponds to the preserved old village of Jiuxian and its numerous traditional houses. Continue to the 400 year-old Dragon Bridge. Lunch on the jetty near the bridge. Return to Yangshuo by the other river. Free afternoon to take advantage of the West road and its many shops. Night in Yangshuo


Day 8 B-L Ping An. Transfer to the rice terraces region of Longji, to the North of Guilin, and have interesting meetings with locals around the villages of Dazhai and Ping'an (3 hour trip). This village of the Zhuang ethnicity is situated in a wonderful setting of terraced rice fields, probably the most impressive in the region. Meet the Yao women, famous for their beautiful pink braded costumes, their heavy silver jewellery and their long hair – sometime even reaching the ground! Climb high up above the rice fields for a superb viewpoint. Accommodation in Ping’an in a wooden inn with view over the rice terraces.


Day 9 B-L Ping An – Xi'an. Short walk in the morning, you will gently descend to the ancient village of Longji, a pretty walk of around 2-3 hours, before returning to Guilin after a local-style lunch. Free time in the centre of Guilin to explore the lake and its pagodas, or browse through the shops in the pedestrian street (depending on your flight time). Transfer to Guilin airport for the flight to Xi'an. Your driver will be waiting for you in Xi'an to drive you to the hotel. Free evening. Night in Xi'an


Day 10 B-L Xi'an. After breakfast, visit the Shaanxi provincial museum. Lunch. The afternoon is devoted to another historic site: The famous Terracotta Army that was meant to protect the tomb of the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huangdi. You will be moved by these 6,000 life-size clay warriors and horses, all perfectly aligned in battle formation. On the way you will also visit the medicinal plant market, based on typical ingredients and often very strange. Return to the hotel. Night in Xi'an


Day 11 B-L Xi'an – Guilin - Beijing After breakfast, explore the ramparts of the city of Xi'an. With a length of around 14 km, these are among the best preserved city walls in China. Enjoy a spectacular panorama from the city walls while on a bike or rickshaw tour. Local-style lunch in the Muslim quarter where you can taste the local specialties. Visit the little Wild Goose Pagoda and get started with Chinese calligraphy. In the evening, transfer to Xi'an station to take the night train to the capital: Beijing (night on board the train in soft sleeper carriage).


Day 12 B-L Beijing On arrival, transfer to your hotel for breakfast. Visit the summer palace outside Beijing, as well as the grand Kunming Lake. You can take a boat trip on the lake in the immense Cixi imperial park. After lunch, visit the Sky temple nested in the immense Tiantan Gongyuan Park, where the majestic triple-roofed roundhouse is one of the most beautiful successes of the Ming architecture. After your visit, enjoy the singing, dancing and games of the locals... in the park. A superb glimpse of Beijing life. Return to the hotel. Night in Beijing


Day 13 B-L Beijing Breakfast in the hotel. Visit Tiananmen square, the Gate of Celestial Peace, and the Forbidden City, the old residence of the Chinese emperors and centre of political power. This is the biggest and best preserved of all the Chinese architectural groups. Lunch with the owner. Cycle or rickshaw trip in the old quarters of the Hutongs, around the clock and drum towers, and passing by a popular market. Next, visit Beihai Park, also known as by the name of the Winter Palace. Night in Beijing


Day 14 B-L Beijing This morning, you will be taken by car and guide to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China which was built during the Ming dynasty. Lunch on the spot. Visit one of the 13 Ming Tombs in the afternoon. The Ming emperors, who ruled over China (from 1368 to 1644), are buried here. They were overturned by the Manchu invasion from the North who then established the Qing dynasty, and remained in power until the 1911 revolution. Walk along the “path of the Spirits”, bordered by 36 animal, fantasy and human statues. Return to Beijing passing by the Olympic stadium to see the birds nest and the water cube designed by Herzog and John Pauline (if you would like to enter the site the entrance ticket can be bought at the gates). Night in Beijing


Day 15 B Leave Beijing Free time before your airport transfer, and flight home.
