Birds of Paradise, Manta Rays & Fantasy islands

12 days/11 nights

Day 1- Arrive Sorong & board Tiger Blue. 10 minute taxi drive to harbor & short speedboat ride to Tiger Blue. Lunch & set sail to P Gam. 50 nautical miles. Dinner on the way. Arrive c.10.30pm & anchor

Day 2- Village & Sawinggrai & search for red birds of Paradise. Early morning wake up 5.30am. Quick coffee & toast. Speedboat ride to village jetty. meet guides & 20 minute hike to display tree. Need to sit quietly & wait. No guarantees. Hopefully after spotting birds of paradise & watching display, walk back through jungle & the orchid gardens & village. Return to Tiger Blue. Immediately set sail to Air Borek. 8 nautical miles. View the waters from the bow sprit. Narrow channels through shallow coral reefs. Anchor & get ready to dive or snorkel to see the Manta Rays gathered here over the coral bombes or cleaning stations where wrasses- a type of fish- come out to clean off parasites from the mantas. Return to Tiger Blue after dive & snorkeling & set sail for Pulau Yanggelo. 20 n miles. Tie to the mooring & have the afternoon to snorkel in amongst the beautiful coral gardens & mangrove tree roots on the edge of these mangrove islands. Opportunity to dive to find the woebegone shark, found only in this area. Great opportunities for kayaking, water skiing & knee boarding at this mooring location.

Day 3- Wake & explore area around Yanggelo. Great birdlife here- cockatoos, hornbills etc. Opportunity to snorkel & dive again with the mantas or the woebegone sharks. Here diving is exciting with shoals of barracuda & fusiliers, wonderful large corals. Great beaches to relax on & shallow reefs to explore Dinner on board at the mooring & set sail at about 10.30pm for the Wayag Islands. 53 n miles.

Day 4- Wake early to view the sunrise & approach to the Wayag islands. Extremely picturesque with great scenes of the mountains to the right & the rugged outlines of the islands straight ahead. Tiger Blue maneuvers into the maze of the islands & moors. Breakfast. Opportunities for diving, beach activities & exploration on the speedboat around the maze of islands. Incredible snorkeling on the nearby house reef. Giant scallops, bumpheads, reef sharks & a huge range of colorful corals. Lunch. Opportunities for watersports after lunch. The next few days is spent exploring the maze of the Wayag islands & mooring in different locations. These islands are totally unexplored & over a few days, amazing locations, dive sites & snorkeling reefs can be discovered. Afternoon hike up Mt Pindito. Everyone should do this. Looks terrifying but actually a relatively easy 20 minute climb. Unbelievable views of these extremely beautiful but waterless islands. After climb swim in the cool waters of the gorgeous beach below the pinnacle. Watch the sunset & return to Tiger Blue. Peaceful night on the mooring.

Day 5- Dependent on weather & sea conditions in the next few days Tiger Blue will sail to Pulau Pai for a day trip. Early morning sail -20 n miles- to Pulau Pai for morning snorkel with the Hawksbill turtles on the reef. This is a breeding sanctuary manned with guards who patrol the island & ensure that the breeding beaches are not disturbed. A great opportunity to snorkel & dive with the turtles & see the hatchery beaches. Sail back to Wayag islands over the afternoon. Option to snorkel on the reef in Wayag again. Bonfire & cocktails on beach.

Day 6- Wayag. Opportunity for morning hike up Mt Pindito to see the islands in a different light. Further exploration of the islands & lagoons in Wayag. Dive, snorkeling & water sports. Sunset cocktails on beach. Another opportunity for a bonfire on the beach.

Day 7- Wayag. Further exploration around the islands.

Day 8- Morning dive or return to beach for more amazing snorkeling on the house reef. Kayaking & watersport opportunities. Hang out on the beach for the day, continue exploration of the incredibly dreamlike islands & have evening cocktails & bonfire on the beach. Dinner on board Tiger Blue. Set sail at c.1am for the 50 n mile sail to Alyui Islands & Jendana Bay Pearl Farm.

Day 9- Wake in beautiful Jendana Bay. Early morning dive or kayak sessions along the cliff face of the islands. Visit the Atlas pearl farm to view process of pearl farming. Meet Tiger Blue for lunch as it sails out of Jendana Bay & onto Kabui Straits, 'discovered by Alfred Wallace. Have an evening explore of the narrow Straits on the speed boat & a wonderful opportunity to drift with the kayak on the current enjoying the evening birdsong & waving at friendly locals as they go by on their anodes. Overnight anchored at the opening of Kabui Strait.

Day 10- Wake & re-explore the Strait of Kabui. Opportunity for another dive along the cliff walls or kayak further into the bay. Take the speedboat out & explore this tiny strait between the islands of Gam & Waigeo. Late afternoon dive in this strait where there the unusual location makes for unusual corals, wall drift dives & caves. This is a great place to kayak. The scenery is stunning. The speedboat can tow you into the bay which looks like a lake & you can drift with the kayak down the whole length of the strait. Wave at the friendly locals who come by occasionally. Opportunity for waterspouts. Afternoon sail onto Pulau Pef. Anchor then explore this beautiful mangrove area. Enter lagoons, discover unusual orchids & birdlife. Visit the resort of Raja4divers who rent this small island group. Opportunity for diving here.

Day 11- Wake up in Pef & have the morning to explore the beaches & mangrove mazes on this small group of islands. Great opportunities for snorkeling & diving in the shallows. Mangroves are the 'baby' nurseries for sealife so be prepared to see many beautiful stingrays & fish species up close. Great location for kayaking, wonderful birdlife & amazing sunsets here. Packing has to be done this evening. Over dinner we return to Sorong 50 n miles. Anchor early morning.

Day 12- Early morning expedition to Sorong market- vegetables, fish, spices, a very vibrant & exotic local market where anything local textiles, kitchen utensils & locals can be seen going about their daily purchases. a must see! Return to Tiger Blue, complete packing, showers & prepare for departure to Sorong airport.
