Sipadan and the Celebes Sea

Sipadan is the only oceanic island in Malaysia with an elevation of 600 metres above sea level. It is located on the East of Tawau in the Celebes Sea and is formed of living coral reefs that have been growing on top of an extinct volcano for thousands of years.Sipadan is at the heart of the indo-pacific basin, one of the richest marine habitats in the world where more than 3000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been identified.

Kapalai is only 15 minutes away by boat from Sipadan, erosion has reduced this island to a sandy stretch where a unique resort on stilts has been built, it is also a paradise for small species of fish and for macrolife-photography enthusiasts. Angel fish, ghost fish, crocodile fish, nudibranchs, shellfish, seahorses, the beautiful mandarin fish and many others can be admired there.

Mabul first became popular because of its proximity to Sipadan however it has recently gained recognition as one of the best diving sites in the world. The island is small, oval-shaped and surrounded by white sand beaches. It is also at the north west corner of a 2 kilometres square sandy reef that, because of its abundant sediments, is home to an extraordinary variety of species. It is the place for "Muck" diving, be ready to see nudibranchs, burbots, harlequin shrimp, blue ring octopus and rare pygmy seahorses.
